Creative Economy MA

How to apply

Signing up for one of our MA courses is straightforward. You can apply online via the Kingston University website or download our simple application form.

What are the entry requirements?

We usually expect applicants to have:

  • a second class degree or above in a relevant area and/or two years’ work experience in the creative industries;
  • an understanding of the context of the creative economy; and
  • the ability to rationalise why this course will be of value to them personally.

International students must have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent for most courses (or 7.0 for Advertising & the Creative Economy and 7.5 for Journalism & the Creative Economy).

We also carefully consider non-standard entrants with relevant personal and work experience who can demonstrate the interest, commitment and ability required to undertake this course successfully.

How do I apply?

You can apply for all courses online. To access the online application system simply visit the link to your desired course and the 'Apply' option is on the right. Visit the main course page now to select the course you wish to apply for.

If you have any problems with the online application then you do have the option to send in a paper application form, attaching copies of qualifications and a portfolio where necessary. You must also supply your referees with copies of the form, which they must complete and return.

Please note you will require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the PDF document. Download this application from the Adobe website.

What should I put in the personal statement?

All applicants should demonstrate their understanding of the context of the creative economy in their personal statement, plus how the course will be of value to them personally.

Do I need to submit a portfolio?
The Creative Economy MA welcomes students from a wide variety of backgrounds:

  • If you have previous qualifications and experience of studio practice, you may be able to undertake studio (eg visual practice-led) assignments if appropriate.  The subject team will assess your suitability for this route, based on the submission of a portfolio of visual practice images with your application, as well as subsequent progress on the course.
  • If you do not have prior qualifications and experience of a practice-based nature in your specialist area, you will undertake an alternative form of assignment in your course (and you will not be required to submit a portfolio with your application).

Whichever the case, please be prepared to discuss your chosen route with the subject team if you are called for an interview (please refer to the Learning Agreement on the course pages for details of the modules and learning routes available).

How do I submit my portfolio?

If you need to submit a portfolio, please do so digitally on a CD-ROM that can be opened on a Microsoft XP operating system using Powerpoint.  Images only need to be screen resolution (between 72dpi and 150dpi).

Make sure that the CD-ROM is clearly labelled with your name and the course for which you have applied. Unfortunately, we are unable to return CD-ROMs.

Will I have an interview?

We normally invite applicants for this course to an interview with the course director and/or the subject leader. International students based overseas can arrange for an interview by email or telephone.
